Flash on the beach ‘08 report

Wow that was a week. A week full of beer, beach and seminars. I will give you a couple of highlights for me.
Stefan Richter showed some nice examples on what to do with flash media server… nothing really new to me on what was possible with it but I loved the examples that he did. It was inspiring.
Andries Odendaal was also a highlight for me…damn dude, how can you fuck up a presentation like that, you are probably a genius but I couldn’t stand watching you struggling there on stage. And if you had the same problems with your computer last year you should have replaced it by now I think.
Luckily for me came Chris Orwig after that talking about photography. Chris was talking about the impact of photos and the story that they can tell. Great presentation, I would love to follow a course at your school because I learned a lot during your seminar which was only an hour. Do not focus on the technical aspect and materials but on just making the shot because it could never happen again. The story about the student who tried to make a portrait of his dad but didn’t because the circumstances weren’t right and then the father died before the student had shot the portrait had a real impact on me and is so true!
James Paterson you are sick!!:) But I loved you work. It thought me to not always think so serious about the stuff to make but have fun. The 3d drawing tool was a great thing btw!
The next day highlights started for me with Julian Dolce who talked about creating the next happy meal toy. Unfortunately some technical problems with mirroring your screen but I love the concept that you guys did. It was nice to see the process you guys had and how I could relate to that with the big project that I’m currently working on for TFE. It also thought me to think about ideas more and work out some concepts even if there is no customer for it, it will keep you creative!
Niqui Merret was up next for me and yeah it was kinda a boring subject but so needed it the flash community. It was all about accessibility. I learned a lot from on how to implement it and make it easier for users.
The inspiring session was done by Robert Hodgin that evening and he makes some really nice stuff. He creates clips on what music should look like. Love the effects you did there and you expanded my choice of music.
On Wednesday it all started of course with our mad french scientist @ TFE: Fabrice (Quoting Ids Klijnsma :)) who is a member on the Away3D team of course! Rob Bateman did the seminar about Away3D. It was a great introduction.
Rob Chiu was the next highlight for me although I have heard that the presentation that he gave was almost the same as last year but since I hadn’t seen it yet it was great for me. Love how you treat your video although I would have like some faster cuts sometime but what the heck… that’s your style!
But the highlight overall and he was the last speaker on FotB08 was Jonathan Harris. I loved the concept of the “I feel” application. I can be on it all day if I had to:) And your message that you tried to bring across did work for me. I could try to type here what he said but I can’t say it like Jonathan did and I’m afraid to fuck it up. I think you can look up the slides on flickr. It had some contradictions of course but it was edgy and I liked it. Our team that went to Brighton spoke on it for a couple hours afterwards and it is still in our minds.
On a technical level we already knew it wasn’t going to be much and it was, but inspiring wise it was great! And the location also contributed to that! Love Brighton!
